Hi all,
I’ve been having bad episodes of gerd the past couple of weeks and I bought otc omeprazole. Day 13 now and it seems to be better but it’s still there every other day after eating. Yesterday got pretty bad again so I took tums at night. At 2 am I woke up with terrible stomach pain and had diarrhea. I have had to go to toilets 4 times now and it’s 630 am. I’m so scared for what it is. My health anxiety is telling me it’s the C word. Anyone has experienced this? Hoping it’s just stomach flu. I just want to cry!

Sounds like a bug or other illness. You can usually give something like that a few days or even a week (or two) to settle completely. What are your overall habits like? Diet, exercise, smoker/nonsmoker, drinker, weight, etc? Those are all factors in GERD.

you’re absolutely right, it was just a bug. My gerd had gotten better after two weeks of omeprazole but still getting that burning feeling at night few times a week. Im just treating them with Tums. How often do you get gerd? Few days a week? I’m afraid mine has gotten moderate or severe sigh. I don’t exercise lol but non smoker or drinker.

Hello, I'm curious about your gerd symptoms? I think I may have it and it's making my anxiety worse! My stomach is always rumbling, and gurgling and also in my chest. When I eat it gets worse while I'm eating and it feels like my heart rate goes up while eating. Then I get allot of gas or something that comes up in my chest and it kinda feels like palpitations but I'm not sure. I have acid reflux already as well as IBS but I have burning in my stomach at times as well. They say gerd can cause severe anxiety due to all the symptoms from it. So I'm curious, I really think I need to get checked for gerd.

Heart rate increasing when you eat, especially if it's a large meal, is normal and not caused by GERD or other conditions. You could have GERD, based on the symptoms you listed, but of course you'll need to talk to your doctor to confirm. I get many of the symptoms you listed with GERD, but my primary symptom is acid reflux and sometimes excess gas and heart palpitations.

I have a lot of reflux and my stomach can make all sorts of noises and gurgling. Have you tried an acid reducer like Zantac or Gaviscon ? They really help me . Also Gas X for excess gas and bloating works wonders for me . Hope this helps !

I get that burning stomach at least two times a week, especially after eating spicy foods. I know it’s my trigger food but for some reason I still eat them sometimes thinking I’d be ok- and some days I am ok with eating spicy foods but I think it gets irritated few days later as I’d start having that burning stomach pain. Sometimes it feels like I can’t breathe but I don’t know if that’s just my anxiety. I also get some heart palpitations and chest pain and my anxiety goes through the roof with that. I also get that metallic or bitter taste in my throat sometimes. Elevating my head while sleeping does help and drinking alkaline water seems to make my gerd go away. I think I’m due for a check up for this gerd so they can prescribe me something better. I used to have excessive gas and doctor put me on omeprazole for a month then famotidine for after and tapers it off and it went away completely. This year is the first year my gerd has been this bad.

I've had trouble with this in the past and when I have an anxiety flare up it is definitely worse for some reason. I had a takeaway pizza tonight and although it was delicious I'm suffering now 4hours later. I'm wheezy and have a dry cough. It mimics asthma symptoms for me.

I noticed pizza gives me flare ups too, but not as bad as spicy foods. I’ve been staying away from spicy food the past week but still have that stinging pain on my stomach at night time. Ugh. This is so frustrating. I’m scared it might be ulcer and I’m scared to go back to doctor and finding out it’s something else!

I can completely relate to all of this. I have these things most of the time when I have GERD flares as well. I think the shortness of breath is due mostly to anxiety, but I think it's also somehow caused by the reflux. I also feel strongly that palpitations are directly caused by reflux, although some medical experts claim there is no such link. Every doctor I've ever personally asked about it doesn't know either. But palpitations are often the first symptom of a GERD flare for me.

I was recently told by my doctor with my current anxiety flare up that it can't be the C word as the problem wouldn't just come at a certain time it would be continuous. I am no Dr but it sounds like maybe you symptoms are flaring up in the night at the exact time your anxiety is. He explained a good example of how quick the reaction your body takes can be. He said imagine you're watching a scary high intensity moment in a film. Your eyes are on stalks, you may hols your breath, you feel all the symptoms of being scared. Now think about how your body would behave in a sad scene, and erotic scene. You would get physical symptoms if you were highly engrossed in the film. He said see how easy it is for your body to physically react to a film, music, speech? So see how easily you can also react to anxiety. It made me think that's for sure!
