So as you can tell I’m here because I suffer with health anxiety. I have had multiple tests over the last 4 years, for breast cancer, lung cancer, cervical cancer, anal cancer, all my tests have come back clear thank god. As you can see my fear is cancer. I’m now really concerned I have tongue cancer! I have googled a lot which I know I shouldn’t have done! I have also seen the dentist 3 times and 2 different doctors.
So basically back in December I had burning sensation on the roof of my mouth behind my teeth along with achy teeth, which then moved to the side of my tongue, I’m sure I can see a sore...the burning on my palate went and then I started to get it on my tongue and gums. My
Gums stopped. Long story short I still have an odd sensation in the back of my tongue, like there is a lump... or food stuck....I also have sore white patches right at the back of my tongue too. I think it could be that I am rubbing my tongue on my back teeth on that side of the mouth. The back tooth that side is bigger than the other side. So as Iv visited the dentist and shared my concerns about oral cancer, she has told me that she is not worried in the slightest and everything looks normal. And she is not concerned about oral cancer. I saw the doctor a couple days after who did a social distance look with a torch and said nothing wrong me basically deal with the sensations! I just can’t seem to shift the bad feeling that something is wrong. Really
Sorry for the long post. Should I just live with it or go back for yet another opinion!

Hi Juliann90. I wouldn't bother getting a third professional opinion. As you're having difficulty accepting the first two opinions, a third opinion will only have the same result. Health Anxiety can be so horrible in the way it controls our thinking. Try to just live with knowing that as a health anxiety sufferer, we're generally always going to think we have a major health issue.

Yean I agree with Triceps, a dentist can easily detect oral cancers, even in early stages. If they say they are not worried, you just rest assured you are alright. And there is another dr that gave you reassurance. So it's all good.
I would leave this behind me and try to focus on other things if I were you,
you will see that the sensations also will go way after a while.

hi triceps, thankyou for your comment! It’s so true, I know what you mean. I probably won’t accept it again. This health anxiety malarkey sucks! It rules me and I’m constantly finding new things wrong this being my most recent.Sometimes I find the sensations aren’t there and when I realise they aren’t there they smack me in the face again.

hi belizz, I keep telling myself this. The dentist has clearly pointed out she has no concerns of oral cancer and I am trying my best to put it behind me! It’s so frustrating to keep thinking like this. I just keep hoping that I will wake up one day and my mouth will feel just fine. Onwards and upwards and hopefully will start to disappear.

Thankyou for your comments.

Why did you get tests for breast cancer? Currently going through a huge HA episode on that.

hi bigjetplane6

when I was pregnant I had a lump come up on the side of my breast, took me about a year for the doctors to send me for an ultrasound becuase I was so nervous something was wrong, originally they told me it was a blocked duct, thena doctor told me it was a fibroadenoma but I just couldn’t rest. Once I had e ultrasound they confirmed for me that it was just that. Thankfully! I also got check out about 2 years after that ad I had a dimple every time I lifted my armpit , that’s underneath the breast, but I was checked over by a consultant who confirmed it was absolutely nothing to be worried about. At the moment other than my tongue issues I have noticed my nipple looks inverted slightly but if I massage or get cold without my bra on it pops back out. Unsure if I should be worried about this or not! Feel like I’m always in the doctors they are going to stop listening to me before long.
I hun are you anxious about it? Xx

My nipple from time to time gets shy but as long as it pops back up again then it's nothing to worry about imo. I think it's because of the bra. Free from it, then poor nippie gets back to normal again.

this is what I’m thinking, it’s getting crushed by my bra, my other nipple is pierced so you can imagine it’s not going to happen to that one haha. As it pops back out almost instantly I don’t feel it’s a worry. But il keep an eye incase it doesn’t pop back out x

Those are tonsil stones, very very common. I poke something back there to dislodge them. I also sometimes use an electric toothbrush to dislodge them. Not good for the gag telex but it works!

Eew! I couldn’t do that, my gag reflex is not good haha. Do they cause a sore throat, my throat has been hurting too. Is it something I will need antibiotics for? I only ask cos when I speak to my doctor on Friday il mention it and then I know what sort of outcome I should get lol x

Did you have an ultrasound for the dimple on your breast?
The nipple does it go all the way in and does it stay that way until you get cold?

Honestly I can’t remember, I’m not sure I did.
no it doesn’t go all the way in, it’s like it’s a hole, as soon as I take my bra off I just massage it slightly and it’s fine.
I had my phone appointment this morning with the doctor regarding my tongue issues. She is not concerned as I have already seen a doctor who she claims is good(aren’t they all) and I have seen the dentist who has expressed there is no concerns. She rechecked over all my bloods that I have had done and said they are perfect. She has told me that smoking could be playing a part so I need to try and give up and she also said that these sensations are psychological. She wasn’t concerned over my sore throat and ear pain as it’s not persistent it just happens every so often. So my next stage is... she has booked me in for a phone consultation with the mental health nurse next Wednesday to speak about my symptoms, worries, and speak about medication! Now I know what u are gonna say to this next thing.. I still can’t shake the feeling I’m being brushed off and there’s something wrong with my tongue. It’s such a weird feeling there, I’m trying to tell myself it’s becuase I keep moving it and scraping it around my teeth! Why can’t I stop!!!!

This is good news. You are going to see a healthcare professional about your actual problem. From there, you can start the work to alleviate yourself from this problem. What would your life be like if you didn't have health anxiety?

I have woken up feeling rubbish today, sore throat AGAIN! Tongue feels weird, it’s driving me
Mad! Sometimes I think should I ask for an ent referral! I just can’t seem to shift this horrible feeling something serious is wrong! I am looking forward to sorting my health anxiety out becuase I am hoping these sensations will finally
Go and I will look back and wonder what all the fuss was about, but the fact it’s been going on for 2 months that can’t be normal right?

When I was in the throes of my throat/tonsil/nasopharengyneal I had symptoms that lasted for two years. Asking for an ENT referral is fine and if you have symptoms that are bothering you it is worth pursuing. Believing that those symptoms mean you have cancer and being stressed about that outcome every day means you have health anxiety.

I have just had another look at my tongue and I’m pretty sure right at the back at the side there is a lump that isn’t there the other side. It’s just completely freaking me out! Like is it something that could have been missed by the dentist at the least, the doctor didn’t look that far back so he was useless!

When we have anxiety, we see something and we magnify it by 100 and make it seem worse than it really is. I say this because I do it all the time. I’m sure you’re ok :)

You guys are pretty awesome on here. You are so calm about all of this. I tend not to talk to my partner about my worries purely becuase his dad has terminal cancer. But tonight
I confided in him and showed him inside my
Mouth, while he said both sides of my tongue look similar there is a difference and he doesn’t think I need to be worried! He said that we aren’t symmetrical but also said if I am worried then ask to speak to a different doctor! Feel like such a fraud but also feel like I need a diagnosis even if it’s tony to be able to move on from this!
