Many people who go into treatment for their issues with mental illness really want to help themselves. I think that's great. Those who do everything they can to help themselves are much more likely to be able to be successfully treated by mental health providers. They're more likely to defeat their illness and live happy, productive lives.

Creating a list of goals and achieving them can help you overcome your psychiatric issues.

But while you want to do what you can to achieve those goals, you don't want to do too much all at one time. You don't want to try to achieve all of those goals all at once. Doing so can cause you to get overwhelmed.

Why do that to yourself?

Not doing enough to help yourself isn't good. But doing too much isn't what you want to do either. Their has to be a balance.

As someone who has mental illness, I think I do a good job of not doing too much or too little to help myself at this point in my life.

I agree there must be a balance. Always. The help can come from somewhere else, but the solution to issues comes from the one needing the help. For example, a doctor can give advice and prescribe something but its up to the patient to take the medications and take the steps needed.
