my digestion has always gone a bit out of wack when i get anxious - gurgling stomach, stomach pains, gassy - but i was wondering if anyone shared a symptom thats freaking me out a bit. my stool has gone very dark lately (like i said, tmi), and even tho ive been feeling a little less anxious lately it's still very dark. i think i remember this happening previously in my life when ive been anxious, but i know dark stool can be indicative of plenty nasty things so i tried to check on the internet. one of the sources i read said that anxiety can definitely cause black stool, while another said it was impossible. trying not to worry atm, but has anyone else experienced this?

The kind of stool that might be concerning is not dark, but black, gooey and tar like. It would be like nothing you ever experienced. Very dark is common and typically based on what you consume.

Agree with Bobnnat, once a nurse told me not to worry until I see a stool that is as black as midnight.

I do not think that the colour of stools is related to anxiety. I have never heard that being a truth. I haven't even heard of it being related. The colour of stools is determined by eating habits and purely in the digestive system. When i first took vitamin tablets, my stools were lighter, and a hazel colour. Some babies have multicoloured stools. My little brother had different coloured stools as a baby he had red, yellow, purple, green, orange, etc. It was weird. As time went on the stools became darker and lastly they became the normal colour. It has something to do with nutrition and food intake, and not anxiety.

Have you asked to be checked for H-pylori? It is SUPER common and I have had it before. All they do is prick your finger and it either shows positive or negative in like 10 mins or so. I had to do a round of antibiotics and BOOM I was good. The antibiotics sucked though because those make you feel horrible in the stomach. Look it up and see if your symptoms match. It is nothing to fear or be scared of but it can cause black stool. Also pepto-bismol can do this too or certain stool softeners if you have been taking any.

thanks everyone for the replies and advice!! turns out that without the bathroom light on everything in my toilet looks WAY darker than it is, as soon as my mum suggested i turn on the light my stool was suddenly totally normal colour again. it was such a simple solution that i was lowkey embarrassed for even worrying about it, but at least the issue was solved!
