Getting three impacted wisdom teeth taken out on Friday. I'm worried about several things.

I don't like being put to sleep. I'm afraid I won't wake up. I also I've alone so there will be no one to watch me to make sure I'm okay as the anesthesia wears off. Also, I'm afraid of getting a dry socket.

Anyone else have similar situations?

I had 2 wisdom teeth taken out when I was younger and then 2 years ago decided to get the other 2 taken out. One was impacted and the other had a cavity. I absolutely dreaded it. I can't even explain the fear I had, but I had to do it. The anesthesia isn't my greatest fear because I have colonoscopies frequently because of a family history of colon cancer so I am used to that part. I was just nervous about being older (in my 50s) and how much pain there would be and dry socket as well. I made myself do it, and while it's not like it was pleasant, it wasn't the worst thing either. I was groggy afterwards and just went home and slept. The pain wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be. I freaked out a few days into it because I didn't feel like I was cleaning the areas as well as I was supposed to so went in and had them look at it. They cleaned the areas really well for me and gave me some hints to make it easier, and the surgeon said they looked great so that relieved my anxiety. You are probably a lot younger than I am so it will be even easier for you. I had a little swelling for a few days/maybe a week, but I was so glad to just get it over. You will be just fine and relieved when you don't have to think about it any more. Good luck and really, we always think things are going to be worse than they turn out to be.

I had 2 impacted wisdom teeth out a couple of years ago . Yes i was nervous as well . Everyone is ! They are professionals in what they do , have highly trained staff to put you to sleep or use gas ect . They will also not let you go home alone if they don't think you are fine afterward . Follow all their instructions for after care and you'll be just fine ! Don't use a straw or smoke as this can develop dry socket . You'll be so happy that its over and done with , and use the day or 2 to pamper yourself and relax !

I’ve had dental surgery and was put under. I wasn’t aware of my anxiety then but I remember telling the dental staff how nervous I was and that if I was going to be okay they replied yes. I would recommend telling them that you are super nervous and anxious it helps when you tell them they can comforting.

I did the same thing! He asked how I was and I said scared and he said not for long and that's all I remember!

Thank you. I'm 40 so I'm doing it at an older age myself. Yeah I'm worried about cleaning causing a dry socket.

My fear is that they will just give me a higher dose of whatever they're going to use to nock me out.

They won’t. Have you tried journaling? Writing out your worries and fears finding evidence for and against the thoughts. Might help writing it down.

I'm amazed that the little suction from a straw could tug a clot out from the back

I journaled my concerns to ask the oral surgeon.
I journal quite a bit. While I don't find that it really helps with examining thoughts, it is nice to have a log to look back on.

It has been two hours since I had it. I was put to sleep and was done in about 30 minutes. Sitting at home with bloody gauze in mouth but I'm in my right mind.

Now just to worry about maintenance in the prevention of a dry socket.

Wow. I had mine done about two hours ago. I let them know that I didn't want to be there because of the risk of not waking up. I grilled everyone on what I was supposed to do afterwards.

They gave me pain meds and an anti nausea med that made the room rock back and forth. I remember saying "Oh sh_t. It's happening." Another injection, they took my glasses off and out I went.

Well now it's over and you can relax and just heal. Just follow their instructions and you won't get dry socket. It's just the sucking that loosens the clot, so if you don't use straws, etc. you will be fine! I'm glad you went through it. You won't have to think about it any more!

Thank you. I appreciate that you're glad for me. It's nice to hear someone care.

Dry sockets do scare me though. I was told day three is when I can expect them. I'm worried. I haven't used a spoon but a did slurp a little broth and ironically, in the process of trying to look out for my holes, I swallowed wrong and coughed for a bit. Sigh
