Can anyone give me advice on what are the foods to avoid that can triggers depressive moods?

my doctor has told me to avoid or really cut down on caffeine - instead of my normal 5 + a day i have cut down at once to 1 or 2 - what foods are the best to avoid and the ones best to eat more of?

I too have a weight problem - because low morale and self esteem have not helped and i have let myself go too much.

Thanks for any advice in advance.

Hi Ana

I have read that potatoes (especially with baked beans) are good as they are a natural source of serotonin but too much can lead to carb cravings and also be less effective.

I read another article that suggests food with chromium piccolinate is also good,eg mushrooms, liver and wholegrains - I would agree with this from my own experiencce.

Personally I found that comfort eating with chocolate + pasta + rich foods made me feel worse and switching to salads and vegetables has helped a lot. Caffeine is a big no no for me, I drink peppermint or green tea instead.

I had another thought. Blood sugar levels can also affect mood so maybe its worth looking into that a bit? A couple of friends of mine are diabetic and their moods are affected when there blood sugar is too low or high. There is something called a GI index for food Glycemic Index or something like that. I also read about how the atkins diet works (this covers GI), that explains about how the body digests food and how it gets energy from foods, understanding that helped me to choose what was 'better' for me to eat.

After/during my first major depression I put on 2 stone, I used food for comfort, to fill the boredom... Diet was something I looked at when I started to recover, becuase of the weight I had gained and also becuase I do believe that a good diet can have some influence on your mood.

I'm not some health nut and I didn't read loads on the subject but I try to keep my carb and sugar intake fairly stable. Its a win-win situation though becuase cutting down/managing these things can also help weight loss.

I've lost the extra weight now and a little more too, but that is more likely down to stress/anxiety from my last job.

Hope this helps...

Thanks for that info - will try and look into that

am seeing my doctor today - will see what he thinks

after all he was the one that told me to avoid caffeine

and it seems to be working a bit - have cut it right down and the only thing now is that i am so tired - caffeine kept me on the go - but once that wears out i am sure i will get going again .

I was quite surprised to find that some foods do actually trigger depression and anxiety. I googled it and found this link where they explain everything on the list below.

I find it amazing that apple juice can cause anxiety. I wonder if that it is the same with apples as well?
