Yeah that is the best thing to do - not to answer the door. Since yesterday, I have a cam that feeds directly to my living room and bed room, so I now have the luxury of knowing who's at the door.
Where I live now, it's well-nigh impossible to get an unexpected knock on the door. First, there's a security checkpoint at the main gate that leads to the apartment compound. Then a meter away from the front door is an iron grill. No one can knock on the door. All our friends who come to visit us will have to call us beforehand and we will go downstairs to the guard post to receive them.
I used to have a lot of anxiety over unexpected knocks on my door and it was mainly because I was running a business at the time that wasn't doing too well, and I had bills coming in everyday. It got so bad that I had debt collectors knocking on my door, and so that's when the anxiety started. I'm thankful to say that it has now been resolved and I have managed to get my financial situation under control.
It would freak me out if a collector came to the door. We live in a hard to find location so we don't have to worry much about people coming to the door. The people who come to the door, at least those that haven't been invited tend to be those passing out religious tracts or inviting you to their church. It is OK. I don't mind them really, but other people who show up, it always makes me wonder what they are doing there.
I have a vantage point where I am able to veiw the person knocking at my door without them seeing me. This enables me to respond to or ignore the the person, whichever is more suitable to me.
It depends. When i'm at my parent's home, there's a gate. But where i live in the city, visitors just knock at the door. But even with the gate, i still get anxiety because the bell rings inside the house. But at least i have some time to prepare myself.
I hate when someone knocks on my door unexpected. I do get that sense of panic especially when someone knocks on my door at night unexpected. When it's people I know if they didn't call ahead they will announce themselves through the door so I know that it is them. I do not open my door for anyone I do not know and I do get the door to door sales people and I just leave them out there. It's too much going on these days.
I always hate unexpected visits! Usually because A) I'm paranoid and B) if I don't have makeup on, I don't want to see anyone because of my bad acne. (due to stress, of course.) So people surprising me leaves me no chance to get presentable. So I usually will just pretend I'm not home. If its someone important, they will call me and say "Hey, I'm at your door" or let me know they are stopping by in the first place. But anyone else just gets ignored. (And we have horrible issues with people trying to sell things door to door here, and I'm such a pushover... sigh.)
