Some individuals in our world don't think that those who are mentally challenged are aware of their disability.

However, that's false. People who are mentally challenged are very aware of it.

And although many who are mentally challenged live happy, productive lives, their are others with this disability who battle clinical depression, unfortunately.

Being mentally challenged can be difficult because some people look down on them. Hence, it can be a major cause of depression for them.

People who have developmental disabilities should be treated with the same respect that others get. Anything less is unacceptable. If they don't get that same respect, it can cause them serious mental health issues, such as depression. I wouldn't wish that on anybody.

So, so true. I would include other disorders in this as well - my son is six and has ADHD, for example. He has no learning issues, but struggles with body and impulse control, as well as aggressive behavior. He is VERY aware of his differences and his struggles, and gets really depressed and down on himself when the aggression comes out. People think he's just a wild kid and has no idea that he is annoying or hurting others, but it's the opposite - he is aware of it, and incredibly frustrated by it. It can be heartbreaking to watch.
