i know I'm about a year late but I just like the movie and the book. I am reading it the second time now and it's just great. Fun and scientific. That's what I love.
I am really sad that I missed the Martian when it was in the theater. I am wating for it to come to a venue I can watch. I have not read the book, and think I would prefer to see the movie to be honest. I probably will read the book at some point, but I just haven't gotten there yet. It is something I am thinking about though.
Honestly, I really hated the book. I can understand why some people really loved it, but I hated every second of it. I got it simply because everyone was talking about how good it was, but after the first 100 pages or so, I just couldn't handle it anymore so I stopped reading it. The feel like the writing in the book was absolutely terrible because of the stupid "thoughts" of the main character that were put into text. Things like "yes, I did it!" seriously made me want to gouge my eyes out. I might be remembering wrong but I'm pretty sure there were things like that in almost every page. I don't need to be spoon fed ideas that should be clear to the reader, I can figure out that the character is happy because he grew potatoes on freaking Mars. Anyone would be happy about that. The book is pretty much geared to people that like simple books without having to really think about them. At least that's the way I see it. I can't say much about the movie, though, because I haven't seen it, but the trailers looked much better than the actual book did.
I loved the book and the movie. The book was fun focusing on all the technical details. CrepesforDapes, I just considered the personal monologue his way of dealing with the isolation of being the only person on an entire planet. If he didn't talk to himself, he would have gone insane over that long a period of time. The one area I feel that the movie did better than the book on was the sense of isolation on Mars. In the book, you are always right there with Mark, and he is never "truly" alone. In the movie, you really get a sense of that feeling of isolation he must have felt. Either way, I felt it was a fantastic read and even went out of my way to meet the author and get a signed copy of the book. While I can't argue that it was an easy read, it certainly didn't make it any less enjoyable.
I liked the movie. I found the science compelling and I think that I have often dismissed hard science fiction as too technical. The only part that annoyed me was the fact that Matt Damon kept talking about how much he hated disco. I am starting to think that no one really hates disco. It's too fun to hate.
