This is actually a song about a band. Lead singer from Dire Straits went to something like a jazz club. The band playing were called Sultans of swing. According to him they were the worst band he ever heard playing. Nobody was actually listening to them. People were all doing their own thing. The band finished and the lead singers said ' we are the sultans of swing '. So this song was born.
