In the past few months, I’ve been having panic attacks much more regularly. I’ve started having them at work as well. I’d been having them at school for a while but this is new. I don’t know how to deal with it, I had a panic attack at work yesterday. Thank goodness one of my workmates was there, turns out she also has anxiety so she was very good at dealing with me.

I also just don’t want my managers to have to put up with that but idk what to do.

Welcome Mia,

I too am saddled with frequent panic attacks. You're so fortunate that your co-worker has an understanding of them. My career included 25 years as owner of a residential school for emotionally disturbed kids. We have 60 employees but I had my own office and bathroom that I could retreat to when an attack was coming on. I've had so many of them over the years that they don't freak me out as much, knowing that I'll make it thru it.

I let many of my staff know that I had a panic disorder which helped me much personally, kept the embarrassment level lower.

If you can, I'd tell the manager that deals with you the most of your plight with panic attacks for two reasons. The first reason is that you won't obsess so much about an attack happening even if your manager doesn't fully understand. Just let him/her know what you'll have to do if you have an attack at work. The second reason is that telling those that you interact with the most will lessen the chances of an attack because you'll be less afraid of one happening.

Hm that’s true, thanks

A couple of my managers have been there when I’ve had panic attacks and they’ve been really supportive but talking to them about when I’m not actually having one is a really good idea! In the past when I’ve had issues with urges to self harm or purge, they’ve said that I can have a 5-10 minute break just to calm myself down, hopefully they can do a similar thing here :)
