Hi I recently fell down the rabies rabbit hole and I can’t seem to get out.

Last month my indoor cat snuck out of the yard while I was letting my dog out, I only realize it right away so she was out there for a few minutes. I only realized it when I went in my room which is facing the backyard, I heard a cat hissing outside and it kind of sounded like her. So I went out in the yard, started calling for her, and checked in between the cracks of my neighbors fence to see if she snuck in there. I couldn’t see her, but I did see another cat in his yard. I started calling for her again and she suddenly came walking out of the same neighbors yard. She was calm and completely unbothered, she didn’t have a scratch or a bite on her.

Flash forward too a week or so later, I noticed she was having a difficult time eating. It looked like she was favoring one side of her mouth and then she started having a difficult time eating some dry food. I took her to the vet, thinking she was having dental issues since she’s 12 and it’s pretty normal for an older cat. This month we found out it wasn’t her teeth, instead it was a cancerous legion under her tongue that was giving her issues. Since then she’s been drooling and bleeding from the mouth, she also looks kinda rough because her fur is matted from trying to clean herself with a bloody tongue.

Here’s where the rabbit hole begins, I can’t stop thinking about the day I found her with the other cat and I can’t help worrying about her contracting rabies. The cat didn’t seem like it was infected, I’ve seen it around the neighborhood a few times. My cat also didn’t have any scratches or bite marks and she was acting fine when we found her. The drooling and the bleeding has me so worried though, even though I know it is a symptom of the cancer that she has. She’s bitten my hand over the course of all of this, I’ve wiped her bloody mouth, and have had drool on me. I’m just so worried. I’ve been feeling unwell recently, but the early symptoms of rabies can match up with any other illness. I’m just so scared and I can’t get it out of my mind

You sound like me when I have had my anxiety regarding rabies. The good thing is she had no wounds and then the other good thing is its been a month later, she is still alive, and then vet has seen her. You know the truth.

Rabbits don't tend to carry rabies, but stay out of their holes! It's just polite!

I'm sorry about your kitty's oral cancer. It's rough watching them suffer. She doesn't have rabies, but sometimes it can be easier to focus on anxiety instead of reality, in this case, having a sick pet.
