New variant out of South Africa, where the population has a vax rate of around 25%. Cases jumped from about 200 per day to about 2,000 within two days. EU shutting down travel to and from South Africa.

High HIV levels in SA cant be helping either.

Yes, travel ban here as well. Can only reenter UK from SA and a few other African countries if you are UK/Irish Citizen or resident, have to spend 10 days in a hotel isolating at your own expense.

On the plus side looks like it may be mild if you are fully vaccinated. Unusual symptoms apparently, but mild. We will see.

Lot of the place is similar to slums. You could split it up. The nicer parts. Then the shanty towns. Lot of gang activity. The numbers gang. They rule the shanty towns. Would spread very easily in those places. Even the police stay away from some parts of the shanty towns. Dare I say a hotel for 10 days for those people would be like winning the lottery. But they could not afford the costs. What will do what the bracket of people?

Those travelling SA -> UK are likely already residents, either citizens or Visa holders. Is a lot though. There was a lot of people using a loophole before. (Fly from SA to somewhere without the red list requirement but cheap to spend 10 days in, say, Serbia. Then fly to UK. UK doesn't care so long as you've been in Serbia.) They will be doing the same again.

Doubt those people will be the ones travelling to the UK, and without either the passport or a residency permit, they wont be getting on that plane anyway.

Do know of one Irish girl who wanted out of SA but couldn't get out. She simply went to another country in Africa. Is due home in a few days. She will be listed as flying home from the other country. Not SA. So there are still ways to get out of SA. Take these routes and when you land it will have you as coming from another country. No idea how many people will be as smart as this girl was. Thus will we have a lot of people hopping into other African countries and flying from them?

I do tell people to do that that I come across. If you are in a red, don't come direct to the UK. Save yourself £2000 or whatever, go to a third country, stay there for 10 days. Flown in via a cheap, Eastern European country and then to the UK. They don't care.

Going straight to UK - if they check the passport, they will know if you have been to SA or not in the last 10 days, even if you switch in Dubai or wherever. Will be stamps in there. So can lie on the locator form about where you have been, they'll know when they look. Assuming you only have the one passport that you used to enter and exit SA. And of course, assuming that they actually check the passport and don't just do as they usually do and point you in the direction of the egates. Couldn't even get a human to check it if I wanted to there.

This girl could not come back to Ireland and not be checked. Her story has been all over the radio and she and her mother were talking on the radio. Her from SA. Went over for a wedding. Way it was told was not to fly elsewhere. Go by land. Still be flying from Africa. Just not SA. No idea how the borders are between countries in Africa. If you wanted to move around. She was told she could get a flight on Thursday next from some other African country. She is big news now. No sneaking back into Ireland for her.

If she is a citizen I don't see how they can deny her entry. Test her? Sure. Quarantine her? Sure. Deny her entry? No way.

Flights are banned from entering a lot of countries from SA. That is the main issue. I am sure she will get home. Now that it has gone public.

Problem is the transit hubs on the way. Dubai, Doha, Istanbul, Amsterdam, London - Not allowing travel from SA. Or transit through them if you have been in SA. Unless you are a citizen of those countries. Probably will find some way home that takes about forty hours on four different flights with a combined travel time of 50 hours somehow, only to be met with the Irish telling her to quarantine as soon as she gets back.

She will get home. Her family on every radio station. Her on the phone from SA. I am sure something will be arranged. We all know how these things play out. Time for politics. Win a few points. Get her home to her family.

Tomorrows papers say the at risk groups will get 4th booster soon. So now it’s 4 jabs I would need maybe 5th as I was offered flu jab too

Don't believe everything you read in the papers. Which is the point we have been trying to get across for a long time. A 4th booster? People are only getting their first boosters at the moment.

The immunocompromised have always been entitled to a 3rd dose and a booster. This isnt tomorrows papers news.

That's those with next to no immune systems, who are a risk of the vaccine not taking, so this is to give them a better chance of that happening.

Hes right in that the severely immunocompromised are entitled to a full 3rd dose + a booster, but that's due to there immunocompromised status, and not tomorrows news, always been the case.

Not as good as the story he read in the paper last week. He confused me with his 4 booster shots. Boosters come after the normal shots. Hence I was wondering about 4 booster shots.

“Greek officials have announced plans to make Covid-19 vaccinations mandatory for anyone aged 60 and over. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis told a cabinet meeting that the new rule will come into effect from 16 January next year. He added that authorities will impose a €100 fine on people who fail to comply with the order.” source bbc news.

We knew these mandates would spread and I said how long before they strap you to a chair and jab you? Some call me bonkers a few weeks back but if I come back here in a few weeks a month the situation is fluid and changing rapidly.

I think theres been a lot of confusion about dose 4, and the news has only just discovered that those exist.

It is not 2 boosters though, it is a full 3rd dose, then a booster. And it is very rare that you are entitled to that - very specific list of people who are very much vulnerable to covid if they catch it, they will almost certainly die and the vaccine may not take as well due to a very weakened immune system.

Paranoia of "where does it end, I will have to have more and vaccines!" from relatively healthy people has absolutley no place here when it comes to "should they get it or not."

I got offered the 3rd booster early so I would guess they would come after me for a 4th so that may be 5 jabs this year as they offered me flu jab too.
I assume people here seen the fences up in streets in Switzerland and the high fences in supermarkets in Germany separating the vaxed and unvaccinated? They also came on trains checking papers. Videos widely available ask if you want to see but has a taste of World War 2 about it doesn’t it?

I am happy for people to take the vaccine as they do with flu. But I believe in freedom of choice and I don’t think what governments are doing is right with mandates

Right, and I agree with you on the mandates. But theres not a mandate here, and due to cultural reasons in the UK, it is very unlikely there will be.

What other countries are doing is neither nor there, let the citizens in those countries decide what they want or not.

If you were entitled to a full 3rd dose, you would know by now, you would have been given a letter saying quite specifically, that you are to get a 3rd dose + booster.

Booster isnt a full dose here, it is a different amount to 1&2.

Yes I had a letter. Well I agree with you I hope it doesn’t happen here but they already sacked care workers and NHS staff in April. I think it’s a 100 euro fine which isn’t much. I don’t see how they can enforce mandates when these jabs are required at such a short space of time. I believe everybody is due a booster in UK now. My brother is due his 2nd so in three months he would get his booster ect
