Isolation is making me depressed

I’ve been feeling really depressed. I’m just too isolated. I’m disabled and live in a group home. I don’t have a job and am just home all day. The only other resident has a job and doesn’t want to talk much when she gets home. The staff here barely talk. If I ask them a question to try to get them to talk they usually just give me a one word answer and there is no follow-up conversation. I do have brief interactions with people online but it’s not much. I really only have one online person I’d consider a friend and he is away for a few more months in a place with no internet or cellphone service. There’s also this one elderly lady online I talk to a lot who is very nice but she could be my grandma so she’s not a peer. I get along great with my parents. Unfortunately I don’t see them much but we do call and text. Is anyone else very isolated? How do you cope? Anybody know a place where I can maybe find someone to video chat with?

Your post makes me feel very sad for you. It sounds like you are in a difficult living situation. It’s unfortunate that the staff isn’t very communicative. Seems to me that that should be part of their job, to engage in conversations with the residents and help them. What the heck is wrong with them?

Would the staff be willing to help you find groups to join? Social interaction is important for our health and when we are isolated day after day we often ruminate on unhealthy things which just puts us into a deeper hole. Do you have specific hobbies that you would like to do with others?

I’m isolated also but for different reasons than you. I know how lonely it can be to have no one to talk to day after day.

@blueberries Thank you! I have a support coordinator. Really it would be her job to find groups I think. I should see if the LGBT center by me has anything since I fit that demographic. I like to play board games and read. I used to go to a women’s board game group but they don’t meet anymore. Maybe there is another one elsewhere. A book club would probably be good for me too.
