I always cough up phlegm in the mornings. This morning it was bright red, but still had that gooey, sticky appearance of phlegm. It’s slowly getting less and less red today, but it is still disconcerting. My lungs were listened to just a week ago and everything was fine. I have no pain. Not even a cough. The only thing I can logically think is that I have been sleeping with my bedroom window open for the past couple of nights and it has been chilly. I was thinking maybe anxiety and stress could cause it? I’ve found other threads where people believe they are coughing up blood due to these things, but have stated their doctors tell them that’s not the case. I am trying to remain calm, but you know how health anxiety is. I’m thinking lung cancer, TB, PE, etc, etc.

Does anyone else have this issue?

You mean bright red as in the whole phlegm is red or that it is mixed in with bright redness? The later case happened to me during dry weather. My guess is that the blood came from our noses or throats, since i felt a blood-like taste in the back of my throat.
I am not very worried about your situation as your lungs had been listened to. Is the weather dry? Maybe your nose/throat isn't moisturized enough.

The whole phlegm was bright red the first two times. After that it started going back to clear. I don’t know if the weather is all that dry, but I do know a handful of people have been complaining about the pollen and their sinuses around here. If the same thing happens again tomorrow morning, I’m going to try some saline mist and try not to worry. That makes me feel a lot better that you have had something similar and it wasn’t anything major. Thank you so much.
