As someone who has bipolar disorder, I had one time in 2009 in which I was afraid that I'd lose touch with reality.
I was in the mental hospital, as I needed to be there, because I was feeling very manic. And for the first few days that I was there, the mania was getting worse. Hence, I was afraid that I'd end up in a full blown manic psychosis.
Fortunately, that never actually happened. I was sick, but I never lost touch with reality.
