I am a student who has been suffering from hypochondria, or at least hypochondria-like symptoms (A.K.A. freaks-out-over-any-two-dots-spaced-approximately-half-a-centimeter-away-from-each-other), since middle school. I've read books and online resources on anxiety, and show certain symptoms of it, but I've never been diagnosed with anxiety, so perhaps it's just another byproduct of my hypochondria. Either way, I'd like to join this community (though I am relatively young), which seems very kind and helpful. It would be nice to manage nights of constant terror over a supposedly-skin-cancer that strikes exactly when exams start. So, hello.

Hello and welcome. Anxiety can be recovered from. Since you are young, now is the time to nip it, while youth is on your side. I recommend a great book by. Carl James, available on Amazon, It’s Only Anxiety. It is very reasonably priced and, quite frankly, one of the best investments you will ever make. His book is a condensed version of the work of Dr Claire Weekes, renowned for her work in anxiety recovery. Her work is a method of acceptance for the anxiety. If you get a copy of the book, I would be more than happy to answer any questions you may have. Hope to hear back from you.

You and I are great advocates of Dr. Weekes work. We know it works because we both have benefited from it. I have said before, it takes time. Patience is not a virtue most anxiety sufferers have. We want to get well yesterday, and who wouldn't. I remember when her books first came out and she gave talks on ITV which resulted in floods of letters. ITV even opened a special studio to cope with the input. So many suffered alone in those days. No websites like this to turn to. If only! She is sadly no longer with us, but her legacy lives on in her books and recordings.

Thank you for your recommendations. Acceptance is a needed thing. I'll see if my library has a copy.

I doubt they do. The book is $11 plus shipping. I do believe you can download it too. An alternative is Dr Weekes book, Hope and Help For Your Nerves. It too is available on line as a used book, no more than $5. Your library is more likely to have Dr Weekes’ books. I like having my own because I can reference it any time I want, which I need to do quite often. James’ book is, as I said, a sort of condensed version of Dr Weekes work, however, Dr Weekes books go into a little more information which I like. Best to you.

You are so welcome. Dr Weekes is now deceased, she was from Australia I believe. So her language and ways of speaking may not be what you are used to, so if you have questions, don’t hesitate to ask. Fortunately for me, I’m old enough to understand her way of speaking, kind if old school, if you will. Get started and let’s nip that anxiety in the bud. If an old timer like myself can recover, you, with youth on your side, have a perfect opportunity to regain yourself much more easily. Keep in touch if you can.

Oh yes!! There has been a debate about American English and English English on Quora recently. 'Two nations divided by a common language'. I must admit, it does get a bit confusing at times. I found Dr. Weekes recordings more helpful than the books. She had a way of putting things over that made one feel as if she was in the room with you. There were many things and people that helped me through my GAD, and she was one of the best. The philosophical and spiritual, (not religious) side I got from my dear old counsellor, sadly no longer with us. The recognition that we are not just mind and body, but that there is another dimension to us helped me so much.
