Gum abscess

Hello everyone. New to the forum. I'm a member of anxiety central but am moving to this new community.

Has anyone had a gum abscess before? I have been grinding and biting down on my teeth for weeks now. Habit I started and it leads to tooth aches and sometimes swollen feeling gums so when sat I looked in the mirror and I have a pea size bubble on my lower gum of my tooth. I panicked and went to the e.r. got antibiotics and pain meds. It's not painful at all and I have no swelling in face. Called dentist and have an appt tomorrow. I'm of course worried about the infection.

Hi Susie - welcome to the forum! I too am a member of Anxiety Central, but have been more focused on this one recently since AC has once again gone down.
I feel like I've seen some people either on AC or this forum talking about having a gum abscess, but I'm not 100% sure. I would assume that if it isn't painful at all, it might be just fine, but your dentist will for sure answer that tomorrow.

a few months ago i was under a lot of stress and was clenching my jaw in my sleep. i woke up one morning to a horrid cracking sound: i had clenched my jaw so badly in my sleep that i cracked a crown that was sitting on a tooth that was holding on for dear life as it was. i ignored it for awhile and developed an actual abcess that would come and go any time i ate.

what your describing doesn't sound like a true abscess... at least not the kind you really need to worry about. i get what you're describing from time to time. they tend to go away on their own in no time.

while abscesses CAN be dangerous, they usually don't get to that point unless they're ignored for awhile. if you're not experiencing swelling and there's no pain... you can safely make an appointment with your dentist. medical doctors don't know much about the mouth anyway.

Hi. Thanks for the reply!! I went to my dentist yesterday and had an odd appointment. The hygienist said the bubble is a fistula .. then we did x-rays and the dentist came in without the hygienist...so he's poking around and he's poking the gum bubble thing and he said does that hurt and I felt nothing.. so he looks at the X-ray and says it's a tooth that has already had a root canal that's infected and I would need reconstruction on it or have it pulled. So I ask ok what is that pea sized bubble? He says it's a bone growth that's not the abscess, the abscess is between my teeth.. there is a spot there also.. sooo I asked one more time lol the bubble is not an infection.? He says no. Then the hygienist comes in with my appt this Fri with a tooth specialist to redo that tooth and take more x-rays.. and she says he will also take care of that fistula. Lol so is it a damn fistula or a bone growth????? Ugh. I hate appointments like that. So Friday I'm going to ask a million questions. I just want the infection out of my mouth.
