Do you fear that you will get cancer? If so are you doing anything to prevent it? I know we can't always control what happens in our life. I was one to never really fear to get any disease until I was diagnosed with colon cancer. Fortunately, it was removed via colonoscopy. Now I try not to worry but really try hard to eat right and exercise. I visit my doctor regularly and of course get a colonoscopy when I suppose to.

Hi Deeishere111, I'm glad to hear that you were able to deal with your cancer quickly. And that you are doing everything possible to prevent it from coming back.

I think that cancer is an entirely man made disease. Our food, water and air are not what they used to be a hundred years ago. We live with an enormous amount of pollution on every level, and that includes radiation. We don't seem to be able to escape it. But what we can do, is to be ever more aware of what is going on around us. A simple way to improve your health is to grow your own organic food in pesticide free soil. We might also invest in a good water filter to get rid of many nasty additives that they put into our drinking water. We can recycle, use less plastic, interact more with our neighbors, spend time in nature and relax, etc. There are so many things that one can do to feel positive and happy. And those feelings really exude an enormous energy. You worry less, you live more in the moment, and your overall health improves. Why waste your energy with fears and worries? Be conscious of the moment.

I fear it sometimes but then I know it's out of control so I don't really worry about it. I was a heavy smoker back in the day and quit smoking ciggarettes but still use a vapor pen multiple times a day. It cuts back on the carcinogens but still isn't healthy ultimately.

I would have thought that there isn't a person in the world that hasn't feared getting sick and especially with cancer at one point in their life. Obviously with a lot of diseases we can do things to avoid getting ill with them but I think with cancer, while there is obviously certain lifestyle choices we can make to limit the risk, any one of us can be struck down at any time with it. While it's obviously going to be hard not to worry, and especially as we get older, we have to try and not let the fear of something start to affect our life and while that's easier said than done, we don't wan to ruin our lives worrying about something that might not happen.

The truth is, we all are born with cancer cells. It's that over time and the eating of unhealthy food that our immune system can no longer keep up the fight with cancer cells. Eventually, cancer cell grows and turns into tumors. We all have it, it's just hasn't taken a foot hold yet.

I've said it before. It's our diet that control our destiny. We are what we eat.

I'm still young, so the thought of dying hasn't really crossed my mind yet. Cancer doesn't also run in my family, so it makes me more complacent. It's imperative that we take care of our health, so I will do the best that I can so that I won't acquire it.

I have family members who passed away due to cancer. My eldest brother who died a month before his 29th birthday died of leukemia. My mom died of cervical cancer at the age of 66. My youngest brother, I thank the heavens! had a remission...he was diagnosed with leukemia but he is still fighting because his immunity is deteriorating. I was biopsied and informed I am producing cells that are actually killing my own blood cells.... a bit complicated to explain here. Some of us are more prone to the disease. That is why I am conscious to listen to what my body tells me.

I also think cancer and many other illnesses we encounter are a result of our modern society and the changes that have taken place over the years with regard to our environment. Cancer does run rampant in my family, and I do what I can to try to get as much exercise as I can, and eat the best food I can. I was just reading an article yesterday detailing some alternatives to colonoscopies, since so many people postpone them. I think it's good to have alternatives, especially less invasive ones.

I do agree that we can't control the environment we live in. There are so many things wrong with our foods. I do try to eat more organic. I get my meats from a meat store. They actually buy their meats straight from the owner that kills and prep himself without all the additives. We are growing fruit trees and did have a garden last year. I will buy from the Farmer's Market or in the organic section.

I do worry - especially since I have a family history of it. I think some cancers are as a result of lifestyle choices, but some are simply DNA and genetics. I think all we can do is live as healthily as possible and ensure that we're getting regular medical checkups. If you're aware of a family history I always think it's important to ensure your doctor is aware of it too - so they can schedule any necessary tests at a certain age.

One of my biggest fears ever is probably getting cancer, not only because of the pain during the whole process, but also because there are high probabilities that the cancer cames back, and that's a really scary thought for me.

And actually, I'm trying to live a healthier life now, I quit smoking and I'm doing a little bit of exercise everyday, they are baby steps obviously, but a change it's still a change.

I have that fear because my dad's whole side had some kind of cancer. Honestly, I would rather get it than my two boys so if it happens it happens just so they won't have to deal with it. I am dealing with Chronic Migraines right now which is not fun but I am still doing what I want to do throughout the day even though it is hard. I think that many people will have that fear because it is either in the family or you take some type of medication that may lead to it. All you have to do is make sure that you do what you need to do every day and go from there. Good luck and I hope that everything works out for all of you.

I don't fear it. It doesn't run in my family but even if I get it, I'll just live whatever I have left. I'll get treatment if it's curable, but not to the extent that I must desperately save my life. Anyway, that's just how life goes, we live and die. Just my outlook on it.

Yes, I'm afraid of it, and even if I'm able to survive, It will leave the dreadful feel that your life span has been reduced by a great deal. You don't know when it is going to happen, or whether it is hereditary or not. I hope it never happens to me, but my mother already recovered from breast cancer, so Im not pretty sure.

I have always had a fear of cancer. I have lost family members to cancer, so it is something I can relate to on an emotional level. I fear my children will have cancer, or my fiance, and our world be turned upside down...

I had love ones who had died of cancer one is my auntie the sister of my mother and one a relative. They both died of breast cancer and they said that this dreadful disease is genetic that is why sometimes I fear that I might inherit it too. But if we will think of this way always then how can we live a meaningful life. That is why instead of having this fear I try to live a healthy lifestyle at least in order to prevent this from happening. It is not always that it is genetically acquired and our lifestyle choices is also a cause to be considered. That is why it is better that we take care of ourselves both physically and spiritually instead of having fears in order to give us that peace of mind.

I am really sorry for your family losses. Unfortunately, I can understand you very well, because I have similar family story. My father died of a brain tumor when I was six years old. My younger brother was only seven months at that time, so he did not succeed even to remember his father. My uncle also died of a lung cancer and according to all this, I can freely say that my family has a history of that deadly illness. Beside all this, I have had a problem with anxiety and as I know, no one else in my family has the same issue. My main fear during anxiety period is that I will get a heart attack. But I also have some other disguised fears, and a cancer is one of them. Before some time, I got a bad idea that I probably have a skin cancer, so I regularly checked my skin and searched online forums for all available information about the disease. Fortunately, my fear did not have a realistic basis and after some time I removed it from my mind.

I think being afraid of cancer is a very common phobia. However, it often helps alot to remember that you should not worry about things you can't control. Many people spend a great deal of time being worried about things that are beyond their control, and it just creates anxiety. I think channeling the anxiety into something proactive like getting all the screening tests you need and things like that are some of the ways to be proactive about cancer prevention.

Of course, I think cancer is a fear in the back of a lot of peoples minds. Cancer is becoming more common, and the scary thing is, most people do not even show symptoms. I am one of those people who does NOT go to doctors. In the past 10 years I have not been to a regular doctor, besides when I was pregnant, which was strictly to check on my babies. I fear that because my anxiety does not allow me to go to the doctor, if I ever had cancer, I would not know it until the later stages.

Good to know you've overcome your sickness. I fear getting cancer only because I've only eaten canned food and fast food for four years in college and I'm afraid it's catching up to me. No one in my family has died of cancer so I'm genetically lucky but the fear of environmental and lifestyle influences still get to me and I haven't had much exercise. I think health anxiety is very real and it starts by being realistic about what we can achieve everyday and set goals for the future.
