We're getting into winter and holiday meal season, and it's always nice to see some of our favorite foods on the table, or to make them yourself.  My favorite holiday food is stuffing, and when I make it I add sage, cooked mushrooms, celery, and sometimes bits of almonds or pecans (though I want to try it with hazelnuts sometime).  I also like mashed potatoes- the kind done with a manual masher that still leaves little bits of potato in.  As far as cookies, I love gingerbread, or those chocolate dipped peanut butter balls.
What holiday foods do you like?  I know there are some people who celebrate Diwali or Chinese New Year or the many Jewish and Muslim holidays, so feel free to chime in.  If you like, include a recipe so that we can all enjoy.

My mom makes duck on Christmas if I beg long enough and can find the annoying bird.  Never fails that I finally get her to agree to it and I can't find it in the store.  It's the best when it's cooked properly.  My mom doesn't cook it raw the way most restaurants will cook it so it's flaky like good poultry and it's like the bacon of the bird world.  My mom has an orange sauce that makes you wonder how anyone could ever call it gamey.  There is a German cider, I can't for the life of me remember what it's called exactly, that my mom makes.  It has apple cider, orange juice, spiders, and is served hot.  It's the ultimate Christmas drink. I'm always one for mashed potatoes and gravy, cranberry sauce, and green bean casserole.

YUM! Such a fun topic!

I love stuffing too...it's absolutely a favorite. I also LOVE sweet potato casserole and that's one of the things I really look forward to at Thanksgiving especially. Pies as well, since making them is a bit of a holiday tradition...pumpkin, apple and pecan pies usually feature for us around the holiday season :)

Pork and sauerkraut. Sometimes bloodsausage (it's traditional here, and it's not that bad).

I can't wait until I can buy gingerbread from the store.

Where I'm from, we don't celebrate Thaksgiving, but we do celebrate Christmas.

My fave is lechon, a local delicacy since I'm from Asia. We don't have Thanksgiving, only Christmas and New Year.

I have so many holiday foods I love. Just reading this post has me dreaming about some delicious snacks. Pumpkin pie is one of my favorite deserts, covered with a little whip cream. I also turkey, potatoes, dressing, and rolls! Too many to chose a favorite for me.

I don't have any particular favorites, as my favorite foods are just regular food like Chinese takeout. Within the choices I have for holiday food, though, I'd probably just pick any type of casserole like sometimes we'd have a salmon casserole dish and sometimes it would be another type of meat. I like the mix of mashed potatoes and meat and then baked to get a crispy top.

All sorts of comfort foods that are bound to throw my diet into a disarray. I mean cakes, egg nog, there is a lot coming my way. And even though I promise myself not to over do stuff, I am probably going to consume more sugar then is needed :)

I am looking forward to my mom's dressing. She only makes it around this time of the year. I also love macaroni and cheese, potato salad and the various desserts. I do a lot of the cooking and always try to add one new dish to the meal that I haven't made before.

I'm not a fan of the traditional turkey and ham so for Thanksgiving and Christmas I always cook baked ziti while my mom makes other stuff. Yum!  This year I'm also going to make shepherd's pie, another favorite.  I love pumpkin and apple pie too

I usually make cranberry sauce for the family on thanksgiving, and the past couple years I've made lemon squares as well. For Christmas, I like to have tamales but unfortunately that rarely happens.

@CT422 I actually recent;y heard that cranberry sauce is somehow poison now and not recommended by some doctors for us to eat anymore. I considered giving it up, but really don't want to because it's so delicious. You should do a search on 'cranberry sauce is poison now', and see what you can find from it.

Tamales are the best, you should make some, and have some great sauce with them also.

I just searched and found this article  on cranberry production. Basically they're saying the chemicals used to clean the cranberries and keep them pest free are killing the ecosystems of lakes when the water is flowed back into them, which  is pretty messed up. I'll have to see if I can buy some pesticide free cranberries this year. On a happier note, I probably will be making some tamales for Christmas, or at least buying them from a store.

Yum! I love lemon squares but it's been a while since I've made them. I am a big fan of citrus flavored sweets - lemon meringue pie and key lime pie are a couple of favorites too!
