hello,
my friend has depression. as i am writing this, she is most likely happy, because today earlier, we went to six flags for our middle school promotion and had a great time(she's doing much better around her friends). however, i'm very worried because today, the entire day, she only ate a few fries and a churro, and for breakfast she only ate one sausage. when i showed my mom our pictures, her first comment was about how skinny my friend is.
my friend consistently doesn't eat lunch at school. this entire school year, she has only gained one pound. the recommended calorie count for a 13 year old girl is 2200, but she's eating around 1000 calories a day. (she does track, and is considering starting hip hop, which means that she will probably need even a bit more.) she claims that she has fast metabolism for her reason, but i know that she isn't eating enough. she also has extreme loss of appetite and throws up sometimes because she has a weak stomach. just a note, she doesn't have issues with looking fat or worries of her being too heavy. she is aware that she is skinny and isn't eating enough. she just has physical problems relating to this lack of appetite and throwing up.
i'm really worried that she could end up with health issues. i talked to her tonight over chat, and she said that she would eat more after track practice. i told her that over the summer, i could personally help were with working out or taking walks so she could eat more and stay healthy. i offered this because for volleyball, we had an add on program where we worked out, with people who were similar to personal trainers, and learned a lot of things i can still use when i work out today. i didn't push her, but i knew that she likes hanging out with friends, and after it, she would be able to eat more. i also offered to invite her over and let my mom cook her some chinese foods she wanted to try, so she would be encouraged to eat more. we can also cook or bake together.
did i make the right choice to spend more time with my friend to encourage her to eat more and stay healthier? or is there something else i could do? i really want to help her, and i am very happy that she is feeling better from her depression, and want to let her have a healthier life, going into high school.
