This has been discussed a fair bit here on the forum, especially on the Health Anxiety board. It's quite common for anxiety sufferers to fear these things due to the media hype, but the reality is that it's not nearly as bad as we're made to believe. These things get so much attention because the extreme cases are just that - extreme. With 28,000+ cases and 500+ deaths, that's only about 2% of cases resulting in fatality. If that's helpful.

Sorry if it has been discussed.

I do fear the flu yearly and actually any kind of sickness, but this is a whole new thing "Novel Coronavirus" meaning new, I can't believe
the china government would shut down over something that was simply a cough and cold, its bigger then you can imagine.

Also you can't take the case amount + death amount to find out the fatality rate when the case amount has not been
recovered.

You also have to consider China has an authoritarian government so if they perceive any loss of control, they will do whatever it takes to regain that power and save face to the nation. China is most likely under reporting but not for sinister reasons, they can only test so many at a time. We would be seeing many deaths in the international cases if this virus was the "killer pandemic virus" the media is cruelly trying to play up for clicks and views. When the Swine flu pandemic began in 2009, they believed it had a fatality rate of 10%, but they deduced that number from a small amount of cases and it was realized after they received more information that the number fell in line with normal influenza. This is what's going to occur with this virus. Swine flu had the same hysteria and fear around it that this virus has.

Health professionals widely believe that there are probably thousands of other mild cases not being reported in China, although this sounds bad it's actually good because it means the fatality rate will be revised down in the future.

If you're still worried, I would strongly recommend "disconnecting" from reading about this virus because it's only going to feed your fears even more. If you're in the US, the CDC is a reliable and logic based source of information and they still believe the chances of catching this on US soil is still low and that influenza should be our current concern.

Think I have said it before. But the virus is not something in the air floating around. Is more a contact virus. If it was in the air we would have thousands of cases. Best of two evils really. China thought they could contain it. They are a very secret country. It was leaked about it and then the WHO played it all down as well. Took them a few weeks to admit it was worse than what they first said. Lot of guilty parties But just because it is out there, that does not mean we will all get it. We have had a few similar ones in the past. The likes of SARS. People got into a panic over that. Some came down with it. But you take the population of the worst countries it hit and those infected were only a tiny precent.

SARS destoryed itself when it mutated and we are lucky on that one, I hope the same thing happens to this Virus.

I am in the U.S.
I worry about India and the Middle East, if it hits hard in these places its gonna cause some damage and be harder to
contain.

I agree with this, its just hard because I want to know what is going on and want to find out any break through's like treatment/vaccines
