Bowel issue

I'm lactose intolerant, so there's my #1 fun bowel issue. In addition, I have GERD and must take a proton pump inhibitor, sleep on an incline (I use a wedge pillow), and avoid eating too soon before bed. A year ago, I had an ulcer in my small intestine caused by a diverticulum that got pounded by stomach acid because I took an occasional NSAID for headaches and stuff. Also had an infection elsewhere in my small intestine a few months back that required antibiotics. A couple weeks ago, I think I had a GERD flare-up and ended up feeling quite nauseated again for a week or so, and I think I got constipated simultaneously, so as you can imagine I was just a tad freaked out for that period of time. And, currently, I feel a strange new sensation on my right under my ribcage -- like something is there that shouldn't be, but I can't feel any lumps or anything with my hands, so I have no idea. Has me pretty terrified, actually. Had to take some Xanax today. GOOD TIMES!

You have bowel problems OP?

I'm lactose intolerant also. It took me a long time to figure out. It's no big deal - I drink lactaid mil and take lactaid pills with me in case I see cheese that I must eat. That happens at after concert receptions a lot. For some reason if I eat peanut butter too often I get terrible cramps and diarrhea so I only eat it every other month or so. It took me a long time to figure out what was going on there - thought I was getting IBS.

I also have to take zantac if I want to sleep laying down to prevent reflux. I can sleep sitting up. That's not really a bowel problem, it's stomach. Possibly from a hialtal hernia. My father had one and they are supposedly genetic. I have not had myself checked.

You're right, the GERD stuff isn't a bowel problem. I just figured I'd throw all the digestive fun in there, because dang, there sure is a lot of it, and sometimes it all runs together! Hiatal hernia is also the cause of my reflux.

It really is because I get so anxious about going to the bathroom it messes with my stomach and is probably what’s giving me the issues. I know there is a huge brain gut connection and our bowels are extremely sensitive to anxiety.

It’s the worst I dread waking up everyday because I know my bathroom situation can make or break me for the day.. I do get the fullness I usually end up going to the bathroom twice in the morning because of that feeling and the second time is always usually “not normal”

I agree! It’s also hard being stuck inside and not having a normal daily routine to keep your mind off your issues, I hope you feel better as well!

Dana, there's nothing wrong with you based on what you're saying... You have the typical IBS... I myself get it but have learned my triggers that cause it.... Some being the food I consume... some being the stress or anxiety level I'm at.... with regards to food I "Do" recommend eating so it's easy on the stomach -

Greek Yogurt
banana (no more then one per day)
hard boiled eggs
Skinless BBQ chicken (plain)
Brown Rice
Fish, shell fish
Protein bars
apples
tuna sandwich w/ lettuce, provolone cheese on toasted Sourdough bread

Try these foods as the norm for your diet a couple of days and reply to this and let me know how you are feeling.... also, do not eat past 6:30pm! Esp if you go to bed at 10pm or so...
Also, and most importantly... when you do eliminate that second time in the morning be sure to eat something right after... Often times, we go an eliminate ALL our contents from our bowels that second time causing those gassy cramps that you might experience...

Thank you so much for the reply! I really needed this right before bed when my stress was starting to kick in. I will absolutely try your suggestions and update you on how they go! I do know anxiety plays a big part in mine as well. Thank you again for all your helpful tips! The food you listed all seems to agree with my stomach now that I think about it. I’ve noticed dairy’s never good for me. Have a great night!
