Basically I started noticing anxiety signs about 4 years ago, I’ve struggled with it everyday and never took any medication for it. Until last December I felt like that was the best option, but suddenly I got a onset of eye floaters, flashes of light , and overall my vision isn’t as clear as it was a few months ago. The eye doctor says I have healthy eyes. And my regular doctor hasn’t given much guidance on this issue. However I have been prescribed medicine for anxiety now. Has anyone else experienced these issues with their vision? Will my eyes ever go back to normal if it is anxiety related?

Welcome nrambo. I've experienced vision and balance problems off and on which my doctors have assured me are related to my anxiety. It always clears up and always eventually returns but it really helps that I believe what my doctors have assured me.

What kind of vision issues have you had? I’ve had eye floaters and flashes of light consistently since December. I have been so worried it will get worse or never go back to normal.

I've had floaters which aren't caused by anxiety but very common, the flashes come and go and the cloudy vision which seems to be anxiety related. You said the eye doctor said your eyes were healthy after describing those symptoms to them? If so, just try to accept that your anxiety can effect your eyes but that nothing physically is wrong with them.

How old are you? As we get older, fluid in the eye gets thicker, and we get what are called posterior virtuous detachments (aka floaters) some of these floaters are stuck to the back of the retina and are pulling the retina a little as they are coming off, which is what causes the flashing lights. If the flashing lights are constant, like a light show or a concert, very bright and concerning with floaters you need to see an eye doctor immediately, as this can be a retinal detachment, you can’t wait days for this or you will lose your vision. If they are occasional flashes, usually those are just the PVDs coming off, which is normal as we age. But if you see a laser light show, fireworks, excessive flashing lights and floaters at any point. See an eye doctor immediately.

I believe that certain people are more susceptible to retinal detachments, but as long as you go to your regular eye doctors visits and have them do dilated eye exams (and fundus photos/OCT imaging) they will be able to see if anything is going on back there.

I am not a doctor but I was an ophthalmic technician for a while. Anything I say is just my experiences in the eye world. Not actual medical advice. My thing is, it’s always safer to just go see an eye doctor, their medical visits are pretty inexpensive and with the technology nowadays you can really get some relief when the doctor says there’s nothing wrong.

Hope this helps!!

Doctors tend not to be worried about a random flicker of light once in a while. If it is how I described it. Like a constant laser light show, that’s a problem.

Hi, do you still get those flashes? For the last couple of weeks I've been noticing flashes of light in the outer corner of my eye (sometimes left, other times right). It's freaking me out :( I've been to two eye doctors, and both said my eyes were healthy... I'm worried there's something wrong with my brain :(

I get floaters and flashes. I also get silent migraines with migraine aura. Its all pretty scary and inconvenient but it hasn't lead me to any real major issues. I did the stoke fear and the brain cancer fear but I notice that I can pretty much stop them all with a pair of polarized sunglasses and I have to believe I can't shut off cancer with a pair of 10 dollar glasses. Eye strain or excessive anxiety will cause floaters and flashes also. They say too much caffeine is a trigger also. I just try to do the best I can to manage stress and wear my sunglasses when I go out on a bright sunny day.

Omg I’ve been worried about this in fact I suffer pretty crippling anxiety, don’t know how I can operate day to day but some how I manage it. But I get the floaters too and flashes been the 3 different eye tests in the last 18 months one a recent as last week and all is fine. I guess it must be excessive stress. I did go through a stressful time at work just before Christmas. It does help to hear this. But I guess you are not alone. Hope this helps you

I've had floaters for years - too much bicycle riding without sunglasses. Migraine aura sometimes - must stay away from direct fluorescent light. After my father died I had blurry vision. I think it was from crying hours every day.
