I’ve lived with anxiety for the last 15 years , I’m currently struggling with eating, every time I eat I feel like I’m choking and it stops me from continuing my meal , I’ve lost over 60lbs the last year , and have been supplementing my eating with protein shakes basically.. please tell me someone else has experienced this and how long did it last for you …….

Yes me! I have lost about 45lbs! I just can't eat! I feel sick thinking about it. And yes I get that choking feeling in my throat! Thought I was the only one!

That’s a lot of weight. Could your doctor help you?

I had a similar but different issue years ago in my 20s. I have a vomit phobia and it got so bad I was afraid to eat in case I threw up. I lost a lot of weight and found it so hard to get help. People thought I was bulimic, no one understood me. I was on Xanax for a while. The thought of eating or preparing food caused me so much stress. I was like it for around a year. A housemate at the time unknowingly helped me. He liked to cook and used to make dinner everynight so the stress of food prep was gone and less time to think. He just put the plate in front of me. Even though my story is a bit different I understand your issues. Distraction is a good way through it, or take smaller bites of food. Also never eat anything in a place you’re not comfortable at. At least until you’re feeling better. I hope you recover soon.

It’s hard to explain to people who haven’t experienced it, but it’s super distressing. I’ve also lost a lot of weight unintentionally and mostly rely on liquids just to get some nutrients in. Hoping it gets better with time and the right support.
Same here I’ve literally been forced to eating oatmeal that’s full of milk , pasta which I can barely eat and lots of protein drinks !!! Just wishing it would stop ….

It just sucks to have it constantly everyday when you just want to have a normal meal

You are by no means the only one. Throat restiction is so commom in anxiaty like palpitations and many other symptoms. Look up that wonderful Canadian website 'anxietcentre.com.'. It gives the 100 symptoms of anxiety, and I could add a lot more. It does not mean we have to have all the symptoms. We are being fooled and bluffed into false beliefs about ourselves becuse the symptoms seem so real. For a beginning try just eating soft food that is easily digestible. But most importantly try not to be fearful of the symptoms. It's that added fear that keeps it all going. Fear adds fear and can become a vicious circle of fear/anxiety/fear. Accept that for the moment you will feel this way, but try and stop adding more apprehension to your already anxious frame of mind. The idea that we are the only ones to feel like this is a very common occurance. We can feel isolated and no one seems to care or understand. Unless one has experienced anxiety there is no way to understand how awful it can be. Stop stoking the fires of fear by adding all the 'OMG's' and the 'What ifs'. Accept it all without comment. Acceptance does work given time. Try not to be impatient with time.
