Health anxiety is not my brand of anxiety (although I do worry about my health) but I think these statistics are useful to put other things into perspective as well. Thank you.
My pleasure Tigerfloat!
I was coughing up blood once. First thing you think of is the worst thing. Went to the A&E and they done every test they could on me. Know what it was? ( After all that ) I had tore some lining somewhere on my insides. Probably when I was eating something that had a hard edge on it. Simple as that. I was also told if we cough too hard it can cause bleeding. None of these things are serious at all. Lot of worry over nothing.
Oh wow, of all things! That's an interesting story, thanks for sharing.

Just thought I would add this to the thread since I was able to talk myself out of this fear with a statistic.

Anxiety = 18.1% <-------- Spider bites (resulting in death) = 0.000002%

Those are way less likely than any of the other conditions listed here. Like it actually shocked me that much. LOL

Throughout this bout of anxiety, I have found ways to look at my health from a different perspective. Every day, I am plagued with the “What If’s?” What if it really isn’t anxiety this time? I wanted to share in this post something that has helped me strengthen my claims to myself that it is JUST anxiety, rather than a fatal event or illness. Being the homegrown, hardcore researcher I am, I’ve found this has helped me a lot.

Let’s go ahead and first establish this constant number. According to the ADAA, anxiety affects 18.1% of the population of the United States each year. Now, it’s time to compare.

Anxiety = 18.1% <——— Sepsis = 0.5%

You’re more likely to have anxiety.

Anxiety = 18.1% <——— Cancer = 0.4%

You’re more likely to have anxiety.

Anxiety = 18.1% <——— MS = 0.3%

You’re more likely to have anxiety.

Anxiety = 18.1% <——— ALS = 0.001%

You’re more likely to have anxiety.

Anxiety = 18.1% <——— Meningitis = 0.001%

You’re more likely to have anxiety.

Anxiety = 18.1% <——— Tetanus = 0.00006%

You’re more likely to have anxiety.

Anxiety = 18.1% <——— Lyme disease = 0.009%

You’re more likely to have anxiety.

Anxiety = 18.1% <——— Heart Attack = 0.2%

You’re more likely to have anxiety.

Anxiety = 18.1% <——— Stroke = 0.2%

You’re more likely to have anxiety.

Anxiety = 18.1% <——— Pulmonary Embolism = 0.2%

You’re more likely to have anxiety.

Anxiety = 18.1% <——— Anaphylaxsis = 0.06% (0.0007% result in death, even smaller chance)

You’re more likely to have anxiety.

When you think all hope is lost, just turn to this post and realize... You. Just. Have. Anxiety.
This is very helpful. Thank you.

This is helpful and something I am currently thinking about to ease my anxiety. My current anxiety is rabies- I have a thread here regarding it. I keep telling myself how rare it is and that does momentarily ease my worries. I just wish I can totally not be concerned. I keep having most likely psychosomatic symptoms from the stress of worrying about this which just starts the perpetual cycle of anxiety all over again.

Well let me help you continue to alleviate that anxiety with some specific statistics.
Anxiety = 18.1% <———— Rabies = 0.0000009%
There hasn’t been a case of rabies reported in the United States since 2015.

I'd love some anthrax added on. I'm currently worried about that right now.

As I am currently really worried about pancreatic cancer, I know the chance for that (in someone's lifetime) is 1%. However, I'm younger than the average person who gets it (and white, don't smoke, drink rarely), so I think it would be more like a 5% chance OF THAT 1%. I'm really not sure on my math, but I think that comes to a .05% chance of Pancreatic Cancer, compared to the 18% chance you said. Again, not sure if my math is right, but I think that means I'm 360 times more likely to have anxiety than PC. And I KNOW I have anxiety, it's just a matter of if that's what's doing this.

Good info, thanks...

According to what I researched, there hasn’t been a reported case of anthrax since 2001, and the only way it can be spread is by contact with wild animals or contaminated animal products.

I did some digging on doctor google, and apparently your chances are very low indeed. For PC cancer patients, quote, "90% are older than 55 and 70% are older than 65." So yes, add that to your 1% chance. Not something to worry about while you're still young.
