Question.....Does anxiety cause indigestion/acid reflux or is it the other way around???? I feel like my anxiety would be less if my acid reflux would stop flaring up, but I could just be wishful thinking too.

I get indigestion/acid reflux from my anxiety. I think they go together. Sometimes If my stomach acts up my anxiety acts up too. This is a good site and I know lots of people will have a good answer for you with their experiences.

I get this big time. Stress / anxiety can bring it on. Along with certain types of food I simple just can't eat. Maybe watch what you are eating. Another thing can be drinking water with a meal. That can bring it on too. After eating try and relax until the food has digested fully. Lessen the chances of it causing acid reflux. If you can lower your stress levels it will help too. Easier said than done.

Been eating Tums all day, so I understand! I feel like mine compliments each other. When I’m super anxious, everything gives me acid reflex. Then if acid reflux strikes, it makes me anxious.

Well Acid Reflux actually occurs due to lack of actual normal acid in the stomach. Lot of people assume it is because we have too much acid in the stomach. No such thing as too much acid. Acid helps food break down and digest. What do we do when we think Reflux is coming on? We take these things to stop the acid in our stomachs. I seriously try and avoid taken anything that will stop acid. I can almost always tell when it is about to hit. Most of those times before it hits my insides are dry. Hence some people use apple cider vinegar to help create natural acids in the stomach.

Most anxiety symptoms work in this type of cycle and just kind of feed off one another unfortunately. So it is probably going both ways.

The best you can do is try to interrupt the anxiety part of the cycle and see if the reflux goes with it.

Anxiety doesn't "cause" Acid Reflux/GERD but it can make it worse if you already have it. OTOH, if youhave AR/GERD, it can certainly cause some anxiety if you struggle with health anxiety.

Hi Sheena! I’m new to anxiety/health anxiety, but I will say that I’m relieved to know someone else is also experiencing indigestion and acid reflux!! For the past two months, I’ve dealt with what’s called GERD. I don’t know that it was anxiety that caused it; however, I do know that my anxiety spiked when I was having all these crazy symptoms. I seriously believed something had to be terribly wrong with me. After a month, I completely changed my diet to plain rice, noodles, water, almonds, bread and peanut butter (lol). Once my symptoms lessened, I then started having probably with bowel movements. Which then convinced me even more that something was wrong with me. I went into full panic mode which ultimately made my acid reflux/indigestion flare up again...

That was a long post, but I just want you to know that I am dealing with this as well. You aren’t alone. It is still something I’m figuring out as I go, but I fully believe the anxiety and acids reflux/indigestion can coincide with one another!! Hopefully this gives you some relief!
