I’ve been dealing with some pretty extreme anxiety for about a month now. Started back on my sertraline couple weeks ago. My question is, has anyone ever had adrenaline like rushes that lead into a panic attack? I just want to understand what’s going on. Thanks, Maureen G

Yes and it makes them worse. I hope the sertraline starts kicking in soon. It’s rough

Thank you so much. I assume you had them pretty bad. I always think the worse.

yea when I do get them I feel like the inside of my body is so hot and it’s just a big rush of adrenaline and then after it’s over I’m exhausted. They have gotten better but I do still get bad ones sometimes

Yes, i used to get burning adrenaline rushes over and over. Went along with my pounding heart. Always seemed to start in the night when sleeping. Would wake me up and keep me up for hours. It was horrible. There were times i thought i was going to die. It has not happened (along with the panic attacks) since i went on Citalopram about two years ago.

Hi Maureen and Welcome. Understanding is so important in anxiety. The more we know about it the less we fear it, because we come to realise it's all smoke and mirrors., illusions that seem so real but are not. To have a panic attack you do need an adrenaline rush. No adrenaline no panic! It is not possible to have panic without adrenaline. Now when we panic something has caused it. Some 'trigger' that we may not even notice. A sound, a smell, a sight always something. In life we can't not have 'triggers'. But the secret lies in dealing with them in the right way. When you feel panic coming LET IT COME! No I have not gone crazy. When we panic we inevitably add 'second fear' That is the panic that come because we panic. Do you see what I mean? By adding fear to fear it stokes the fires of panic. Now panic will always die down eventually because the adrenaline glands empty out and stop pumping adrenaline into the body. But while this is happening it can be very frightening. If we are in a shop or supermarket we clutch the handle of the trolley so tight our knuckles turn white. Oh yes, I do know. Everyone is looking at us, we think, when they are not. The 'what ifs' come into the mind which creates more fear. 'Will I collapse?' In all my years in counselling I have never heard of anyone collapsing with a panic attack. Now you know what's going on it may help to understand. I suggest a book by Dr. Clare Weekes called 'Essential help for your Nerves', available on Amazon. She deals extensively with panic attacks and offers some excellent advice. Take care now, and remember to accept and not add fear to fear.

"It's just a panic attack" is the phrase I repeat to myself after the weird hot feeling, clamminess that foretells a panic mode taking over my body. If I'm in public, I try to find a place to sit down and ride it out. Most of mine occur when I'm trying to go to sleep and I keep repeating my mantra even when it feels like I'm having a heart attack. When it's over I wipe my brow, maybe change my shirt if it became soaked with sweat but most importantly, I've learned not to worry about the next one that inevitably will arrive. That has really helped my general anxiety level, learning not to worry about the next attack. I already worry about irrational stuff but have been able to know for sure that I will not die from my next panic attack.

I do believe I understand the sensations as well....with me a lot of times with severe anxiety situation or a panic attack, I get an "energy feeling" in my legs...that will bring on my most common symptom of the feeling of not being able to walk...this also creates shakiness in knees
