Anyone else have wicked acid reflux? I have been battling it for about 10 years and I did the thing that I KNOW I ought not do and started googling and now I’m horrified of cancer. Is anxiety related to acid reflux? Cuz I feel like I’m stuck in this endless cycle of the having the symptoms- freaking out which makes symptoms worse and so on and so on. Any words of encouragement for me guys?!

Same. Seeing a gastroenterologist on Tuesday. I google everything and it makes it so much worse. My doctor told me that acid reflux can cause anxiety. Being nervous or anxious makes my acid reflux worse. Vicious cycle. Today my anxiety is causing my throat to feel like it’s closing and that I can’t breathe. Youre probably healthy! Hang in there.

I've had severe reflux/lpr going on 20 years. it must run in my family with several members, including my mother, needing surgery because of how bad it was. i had an endoscopy three years ago and all that was noted that some areas were red which basically just confirmed i had reflux. they didn't even suggest doing a follow-up in 1,2,5,10 years. i've had the cancer concerns because of it but i more or less got past it. especially after the endoscopy. it still creeps in to my mind from time to time, but that's usually just a sign that my reflux has been worse than usual and i need to take better care of it. what i find more bothersome about reflux are all the "oh, ****! am i having a heart attack?!?" thoughts that pop in to my head when it kicks in!

For me the final outcome was a burst ulcer. The end result of not doing anything about the acid reflux. I all but ignored it. It just got worse as time went on. Body infections came first. Gastritis came second. I was in and out of the a&e nearly every other week. Always put on a drip to stop me throwing up. The body can only take so much of this. Thus an ulcer formed and burst. That meant a month and 3 operations in hospital. Now I am on PPI's daily. That is medication for such things as acid reflux. Should have had a camera down me maybe 2 years back. But the thought it frightened me. Would have saved a lot of I finally ended up going through. As things went, after I was discharged, I had to go back for a monthly check up and they done the whole camera job. Seriously I wondered why it had frightened me so much. It was such an easy thing to have done. So don't be like me. Get help early for the acid reflux and save yourself any future problems.

that sounds pretty awful.

with that being said, what happened to you is incredibly rare and shouldn't freak you out, OP.

it's pretty reasonable to pick up some OTC omeprazole and give that a go, though. there's a strong likelihood that this isn't even reflux-related.

That was my whole point. Get it looked after early, unlike I did, and avoid all problems in the future. I made the mistake of not looking after it. Thus it just got worse. But if looked after, and treated, it can be managed. For the record, I have heard many people tell me they suffer from acid reflux and they share a story and I think to myself ' that is not acis reflux '. What they are talking about it normal stomach acid. The type that would do a person no harm at all. But they are quick to tell everybody how bad they get hit by acid reflux. So bad is it they never have to take anything for it at all. They can continue eating as per normal. Heck it was the real deal their eating would be disrupted and they would need to be taken something for it. So people's views on what acid reflux really is can vary greatly.
