Supplements or drinks that have calming effects

Sometimes I get so upset and overwhelmed that I need something to bring me down. I have high blood pressure, so being worked up is not especially healthy for me.

Does anyone have experience with a supplement or a tea/drink that is calming? I don't want to run to the doctor and get a prescription, I'd rather do it the natural way. If you have drink recipes that would be great too.

I am constantly looking for a way to calm myself and have only found a handful of natural remedies. One of my favorite things to drink when I'm upset is "Tension Tamer Tea." It doesn't have the best taste, but when you add a bit of milk and honey to the tea, it doesn't taste nearly as bad. The tea really calms me down. I feel myself physically calm and my whole entire attitude is a bit more positive. I would also suggest looking into St. John's Wart supplements. It's a type of sage that has been put into pill form. It works very well for depression and anxiety, but I find that after using it regularly, it helps control my constant mood changes.

Well, most of the time I feel stressed or anxious and I can't sleep I prepare myself some green tea. It is known to calm your muscles and lower your blood pressure so you can relax and even sleep after a while. I guess try it out to see if it works for you, there's no need to go to the doctor yet when you have a lot of natural remedies available. My grandmother also used to prepare me a drink with milk, an egg and sugar (it had a French name, somethign like "chateau"). I know sugar doesn't help your case but trust me you'll feel relaxed after drinking this one!

Love me some green tea! It certainly is calming. I feel like it relaxes my stomach after a big meal.

Green tea does contain some caffeine though, not sure if you're aware of that! However, I *think* you can buy decaf green tea.

Chamomile tea is what comes to my mind. It is great right before bed. Another winner in hot chocolate. Either of these taken right before bed will help you sleep. Warm milk will do that too.

Does anyone else have experience with St. John's Wart? I've heard some possibly bad things about it I believe. It will certainly do some of my own research, but I'd love to hear personal experiences. I'm going to make a separate post about it. Thanks guys!

I like spice and I like tea, so Chai tea is often my go to choice for this kind of thing. It brings two of what I love together. Another drink I like to calm down is pumpkin spice coffee but I can only get the kind I like the most in the Fall.

I can think of several sedative herbs actually, my mother and aunties are actually great fans of them. Besides green tea, I can think of Lavender and Californian Poppy too as relaxing beverages. Chamomile tea (manzanilla) it is used to treat a variety of conditions, including anxiety, menstrual cramps, burns and insomnia, as far as I know.

Tea in itself has a calming and stress relieving effect, as it contains theanine.

Wikipedia said:
Theanine has been studied for its potential ability to reduce mental and physical stress,[29] improve cognition,[30] and boost mood and cognitive performance in a synergistic manner with caffeine.
Apart from that, I'd suggest the commonly mentioned chamomile and valeriana (I haven't tried the latter as I'm not entirely sure it's even legal in my country).

As I've said before, I'm from the UK and seeing as we are well know for being a nation of tea drinkers, I've often found that simply sitting down with a cup of tea and maybe a biscuit is one way to relax and keep my head straight on particularly busy days. Now I'm not saying that there is anything in the actual ingredients of tea that is scientifically proven to have a calming effect, but as with a lot of things it depends more o your actual state of mind rather than what you are actually taking.

I associate a cup of tea with relaxing and having a break, so in turn whenever I'm stressed then I'll cling to the knowledge that a cup of tea will help to calm me down, even tough it might not do actually in a physical sense.

Chamomile tea does calm me. I have heard of tension tamer tea, but I don't recall if I've ever taken it. If it doesn't have a good taste, I probably won't bother buying it, since it's less likely I'll use it. I have taken a drink with magnesium in it with good results. I'm drawing a blank on the product name right now, but it's similar to this: (Natural Calm, I added a link), and might be helpful for you.

St. Johns Wart is a great natural drink for calming down anxiety and making you feel a bit happier. Camomile tea is also very good as it relaxes you. You could also try Kakade, which is Hibiscus, it is very calming and relaxing.

St John's Wort is a great help for depression, if several sources are to be believed, but it should never be taken if you're on certain medication, like some depression meds. Apparently the herb is so strong that it can severely interfere with the medication. So please find out if your meds are combatible with St John's Wort before taking it.

That is an important point to make, and if a person IS receiving treatment for depression, then that person can't then start taking other things solely based on what helps others. With any medication there will be a list of what it can and can't be taken with and it's important to always make sure that you double check everything that you take, just to make sure that it's not going to be doing you more harm than good.

I also use the Natural Calm magnesium supplement, as magnesium is a natural relaxant, that also lowers blood pressure. I've also been taking a niacin supplement that has helped a lot. Watch the documentary "Food Matters" for more information on this.

Green tea might do the trick for you, even if you have a high blood pressure, but you'd hyave to monitor yourself more. By the way, don't you treat your high blood pressure? Because it's quite a big problem, honestly, that mustn't be left untreated, because in time, it can seriously lead to health complications.
