What do you think makes people so afraid of insects? I am one of those that is scared of spiders and insects that look gross. I can't even look at a scientific photo of a bug up close, I get the eebie geebies real bad. Most bugs are not harmful so what makes us so afraid of them?

I am scared of praying mantis. I can really freak out and lock myself in a room if I hear there is one in the viscinity and then cover myself from head to toe with a thick blanket.

I still would dare to peep to make sure someone has safely disposed off the insect far away.

I remember that I never had this fear in my teenages but my aibkinga used to scare me with it and others woukd relate the incident on how a praying mantis targeta to bite the nose and doesn't get off till you bleed. Such a story gave me the fear that is so hard to overcome.

I have many times tried voluntarily to shoo it away and I have been successful too however, it being seasonal I don't have a positive reinforcement enough to let me get over this fear.

I think I may need to read about the insect in depth to know the truth.

Years ago I read a book about a man who had to go to Africa for his work. He had to go into the deepest darkest Africa and stayed for a few months. While he was there he was sleeping in his tent and a spider came in. The book went on saying about his business and so forth. But one day, months after he had returned home, he started to get severe headaches. :nurse: It turned out that while he was in Africa, a spider had crawled up his nose and laid eggs. The headaches had started because the eggs had hatched and there were baby spiders crawling around in his brain.:D

People see spiders as predators, some have fangs. Spiders are scary because they are difficult to catch and may bite. Some are poisonous and their poison can kill. Then there is the fear that we may get caught up in a humungous spiders web and get eaten. I'm rather surprised that our TV chefs haven't yet devised some delicacy? Spider soup perhaps?

Here is a nice wee pic of a spider bite. I hate the little critters and have a phobia about them too. Especially crane flies. When I was 5 years old I was told that they eat little girls between the age of 4 and 6, so of course I was scared. :arghh:

Oooh, that is such a gross story. I could see being a little terrified of bugs that can harm you or lay eggs inside of you, but there are really no poisonous bugs where I live and so the fear is mostly based on how gross the bugs are.

My phobia has always been the fear of Spiders. Was that book a true story? I think I may have saw that on TV that it truly happened to that man. This just makes me wonder what else could have possibly, have gotten inside us without our knowledge.
