Hi, I came across this forum today and felt it may be helpful to talk to others who deal with anxiety. I've had depression since I was a pre-teen, but anxiety is something that began in the last few years. I've recently found out my dad has had an issue with social anxiety and two of his brothers are on antidepressants. Sounds like this could be hereditary? Anyhow, I'm hoping to have some meaningful conversations and find ways to cope with anxiety that aren't necessarily meds.

Some people in the past have mentioned to me that mental illnesses can be hereditary. I think it depends on the reason for the mental illness. It could have been a small bump on the head when we were a baby. Or maybe a strain of abuse. Maybe it could have been something that happened in the school playground, and then again, it could be as you say, hereditary.

You could always ask your doctor to do a DNA test to see if it is hereditary. It is just a blood test and doesn't hurt.

If your father and two of his brothers all suffer mental illness, then it could have been a joint trauma that they all went through that affected them when they were children themselves. Things can happen to us when we are children and the side effects come out years later leaving us wondering what on earth is the matter. At least that is the way with my won own mental illness. It was brought on by childhood trauma and the effects are being seen years later. Therapy ou could be a good idea. Perhaps you can ask your doctor to refer you to a specialist?

You got that right sometimes you never know if you are coming or going and i do get suicidal thoughts at times too
Those thoughts are horrible @XmasCarol52 I have them too. They come like a bullet when I am least expecting it. I have to keep my mind occupied all the time which is really tiring. At least when I keep my mind occupied it doesn't take me long to forget the thoughts and they stop coming. But then they do start again and I am not sure what sets the thoughts off.
