For instance, I know some adults who suck their thumbs. What would be wrong with such people? Is it an obsessive disorder? Myself, I chewed pencils in first grade, but I got over it.

Pardon me if this is not directly related. I just want to know your opinion about an acquaintance named Tintin. She is around 30 years old, married and with one child, a toddler. She speaks in a normal. But I have noticed that when her mother is present, her diction changes to that of a little girl. Even her pronunciation of some words become like mimicking a girl. When a friend called her attention to that issue, she said that she just got used to that kind of speech when talking to her mother because she grew up that way. What do you think is the problem with Tintin?

To my knowledge, the people that I mentioned who sucked their thumb are not mentally challenged, though they were slow in school. Note, they are women, though that is irrelevant. In regards to your case, I'm wondering if the woman you mentioned is normal or suffers some mental disability.

I am not really sure I am following the debate here, but I think that when an adult is doing baby things one of two things might be happening. One, the adult is just calling the attention of someone for some reason. Two, the adult is unaware of what he/she is doing and does have a traumatic situation that is causing that.

Sucking the thumbs is certainly something not normal for an adult. @jy76, what is your relation with those adults?

I'm not sure any of this matters if they are habits that don't actually affect you. Some people may suck thumbs, bite nails, pick at parts of the body, but as long as they do them in private does it matter?

If you refer to 'childlike' behavior, then that's different, but we can look at Trump who behaves like a child and he ran for President...

Sucking thumbs is a sign of insecurity, and I don't think people should be mocked for habits that make them feel better.

I have known people who acts like a child sometimes, including myself. Haha :D But not to the point wherein I do baby stuffs like sucking my thumb or doing baby talks. Yes it isn't really common and appropriate for an adult to such their thumb, well I've seen some biting their nails off and I think that's pretty normal, especially when someone feels tensed. In my opinion, people who does these habits grew up with it or they aren't just aware that what they are doing is awkward and not right for their age. Just saying.
